BAKER, Nev. - A 132-year-old rifle was the last thing Great Basin National Park officials were expecting to wander across.
In November, park archaeologists discovered a Winchester Model 1873 Rifle. The rifle had been 'exposed to the sun, wind, snow and rain' and was found leaning against a tree in the park according to a post on the Great Basin National Park Facebook page.
The stock's wood was cracked and the gun has been extremely weathered. The barrel was rusted to the point of nearly camouflaging it as it tilted against the tree.
Great Basin National Park workers researched the rifle using its serial number. The serial number corresponds to the Cody Firearms Museum in Cody, Wyo. and has a manufacturing date of 1882. The Winchester records don't have who purchased the rifle from the warehouse or where they had it shipped so the complete history of the rifle is still unknown at this time.
According to the Facebook post, the 'Winchester Model 1873 rifles hold a prominent place in Western history and lore.' The rifles were considered the 'everyman's rifle' and originally sold for about $50 but were reduced in price to $25 in 1882.
The Winchester Model 1873 is commonly referred to as 'the gun that won the West.'
The Great Basin staff is looking for answers about who left the gun and why it was never retrieved.
The park staff said they plan to send the rifle to conservators to 'stabilize the wood and apply museum conservation techniques.'
